From Data to Insights.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

For the most part, communities are designed from a spatial planning perspective. While this is an important vantage point, rarely does it account for the economic forces that make our communities functional and prosperous. Such oversights have resulted in planning shortfalls such as inefficient urban form, job-housing mismatches and misguided investment, failing to adequately equip our communities for the future. Subsequently, many of our community’s punch below their weight. An economic analysis can help to identify comparative advantages, attract employment with large multiplier effects and strategically guide investment to its most productive use. Those that incorporate urban economics into their community vision will stand to gain by building more robust communities.

  • What are our vulnerabilities and comparative advantages?

  • How much does a specific industry contribute to the local economy and how can one best diversify?

DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS

From changing consumption patterns to spending on public goods, demographics is said to explain two-thirds of nearly everything. Rapidly changing population dynamics has meant that the use of demographic analysis has never been more important. Whereas the last decade was defined by mass consumption resulting from the spending patterns of baby boomers, their transition into retirement has meant that consumption patterns are beginning to slow. These demographic forces are triggering a notable decline in some sectors, while others are experiencing a welcomed boost. In accordance, we are witnessing a shift from single family housing to retirement housing and a growth in demand for elderly care facilities. Those that make an effort to anticipate these changes will be positioned to adapt to changing dynamics and will be better situated to serve their communities.

STRATEGIC QUESTIONS
  • How are population dynamics shaping my community?

  • What does our demographic profile look like and what will it look like in 5 / 10 / 20 years?

  • Based on evolving demographic trends, how should we be allocating resources and preparing our community for the future?

  • How can we prepare for and benefit from the aging population?

MARKET RESEARCH

As people transition through different stages of their lives, their preferences and spending patterns change. At first glance this may appear at random, however, through proper modes of analysis important patterns can be revealed. Those who live in the same neighborhoods, for example, are more likely to have similar characteristics than those chosen at random. The same can be said about similar income levels and age cohorts. Sector specific market research strategies such as customer segmentation and geodemographic analysis offer businesses an opportunity to better understand their customer base and learn how socioeconomic, demographic and geographic trends influence them. The rise of big data and new techniques for data analysis represent an important opportunity for businesses and communities to make more informed decisions about their future.
